Nestlé Targets Brazil with New Arabica Variety Called Star 4

As a coffee lover and avid follower of coffee news, I am always excited to hear about new developments in the coffee industry. Recently, multinational food giant Nestlé announced the launch of a new high-yielding coffee variety called Star 4, specifically targeting the Brazilian coffee market.

According to Nestlé, the Star 4 cultivar has shown promising results in terms of production yields and resistance to pests and diseases. This is great news for the green coffee sector as a whole, as it represents a step towards sustainability in coffee production.

One of the key features of the Star 4 variety is its larger bean size and resistance to coffee leaf rust. Nestlé’s field trials have shown that Star 4 yields are significantly higher than those of the two most commonly used Brazilian local varieties, which also helps reduce its carbon footprint.

The new plants have been field-tested in key coffee-growing areas of São Paulo and Minas Gerais in Brazil, and the variety has been registered with the Brazilian Coffee Technology Support Foundation (Procafé). Nestlé has also highlighted that the Star 4 variety maintains the characteristic taste of Brazilian coffee, which is a significant factor considering Brazil’s status as the world’s largest producer and exporter of arabica coffee.

This launch of Star 4 follows Nestlé’s previous developments of Roubi 1 and 2, robusta varieties that are high-yielding and resilient, currently being introduced to Nestlé’s supply chains in Mexico.
