Study Finds Sedentary Coffee Drinkers Have Reduced Risk of Mortality

Are you a coffee lover who spends long hours sitting at a desk? Well, here’s some good news for you! According to a recent study published in BMC Public Health, sedentary coffee drinkers had a 24 percent reduced risk of mortality compared to those who sat for more than six hours and didn’t drink coffee.

The lead author of the study, Huimin Zhou from the Medical College of Soochow University in China, provided this additional finding at the request of The Washington Post. The study, which analyzed data from 10,639 subjects collected over a decade, found that non-coffee drinkers who sat for six hours or more per day were 58 percent more likely to die of all causes than coffee drinkers who sat for less than six hours a day.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that sitting for more than eight hours a day was associated with a 46 percent higher risk of all-cause mortality and a 79 percent higher risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. On the other hand, those who drank more than two cups of coffee per day had a 33 percent reduced risk of all-cause mortality and a 54 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular disease mortality compared to non-coffee drinkers.

The study highlights the potential benefits of both moderate coffee consumption and reducing sedentary behavior. However, the researchers emphasize the need for further research to fully understand the complex compounds in coffee and their effects on health.
