Three Questions with Francis Kungu of Kenya-Focused Jamii Coffee

In a world where coffee farming can often lead to financial struggles for smallholder farmers, Francis Kungu of Jamii Coffee is working to change that narrative. His journey from Kenya to the United States and back again has led him to establish a green coffee import company that prioritizes the economic well-being of rural coffee-farming communities in Kenya.

Inspired by a Starbucks gift card that opened his eyes to the disconnect between coffee consumption and production, Kungu delved into the world of international coffee trade. Despite facing challenges and complexities in the Kenyan coffee industry, he persevered and founded Jamii Coffee in 2016.

Through direct trade relationships with small-scale farmers in Kenya, Jamii Coffee has made a significant impact on the lives of approximately 3,000 farmers. By working closely with farmers like Charles Mutwiri and Derek Mbugua, Kungu is not only helping to improve their livelihoods but also promoting sustainable and ethical practices in the coffee industry.

Kungu’s passion for coffee extends beyond just the beverage itself. He believes that coffee has the power to bring people together and improve lives, but he also recognizes the challenges posed by climate change and the need for sustainable farming practices.

If it weren’t for coffee, Kungu says he would still be working in agriculture, a testament to his dedication to supporting farmers and helping them produce better crops.
