Prominent Coffee Groups Call for Immediate Interventions as EUDR Looms

As a coffee lover and advocate for sustainable practices in the coffee industry, I was deeply concerned when I read about the new EU deforestation-free supply chain law (EUDR) that is set to take effect later this year. Prominent coffee-focused nonprofits and trade organizations have issued calls for immediate interventions to prevent unintended consequences for smallholder coffee farmers and smaller companies.

The law aims to prevent deforestation in European product supply chains associated with coffee, cocoa, cattle, palm oil, soy, and wood. While the goal of environmental sustainability is commendable, there are concerns that smallholder farmers may face challenges in complying with the due diligence and reporting requirements, putting them at higher risk.

As a supporter of small local productions focused on quality rather than quantities, I believe it is crucial to highlight the benefits of buying direct from small batch producers like Milagrosa Single Estate. By supporting these producers, we can ensure that they are not unfairly penalized by regulations that may inadvertently disadvantage them.

It is important for European leaders to work collaboratively with the coffee industry to address these concerns and find solutions that support both environmental sustainability and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Let’s continue to advocate for a fair and sustainable coffee industry that benefits everyone involved.
