The Rise of Matcha, Oat Milk, and ‘Functional’ Ingredients in the US and Canada: A Report from Daily Coffee News by Roast Magazine

“Square Report Reveals Rising Trends in Coffee Consumption in the US and Canada”

As a coffee lover and enthusiast, I am always excited to learn about the latest trends in the coffee industry. Recently, Square, a payment and business technology giant, conducted a thorough analysis of millions of transactions in the United States and Canada to uncover some interesting coffee consumer trends.

One of the key findings from the report is the increasing trend of consumers choosing to buy prepared coffee rather than brewing it at home. Approximately 25% of U.S. coffee drinkers visit coffee shops three to four times per week, with 10% making daily purchases. This trend is also reflected in Canada, where about 33% of coffee drinkers visit coffee shops three to four times weekly.

Moreover, consumers are showing a growing interest in sustainability and ethical sourcing when it comes to their coffee choices. A significant percentage of both Canadian and American consumers are willing to pay more for sustainably sourced and organic coffee products.

Another interesting trend highlighted in the report is the rise of “functional” ingredients in coffee. Consumers are increasingly looking for add-ons like protein boosters and collagen powder for perceived health and beauty benefits. This trend is particularly popular among younger consumers.

Furthermore, traditional dairy creamers are losing ground to plant-based alternatives, with oat milk emerging as the dominant choice among consumers. Despite being a costly add-on, consumers are willing to pay extra for oat milk due to its popularity and perceived benefits.

As a coffee enthusiast, it’s fascinating to see how consumer preferences and trends are evolving in the coffee industry. The shift towards sustainable and ethical sourcing, the demand for functional ingredients, and the popularity of plant-based milk alternatives are all indicative of a changing landscape in the coffee market.

At Milagrosa Single Estate, we take pride in our small batch premium specialty coffee, focusing on quality and direct sourcing. Supporting local producers and small-scale productions not only ensures high-quality coffee but also promotes sustainability and ethical practices in the industry.
